How to correctly interpret your dream and understand its underlying motives

Add to favorites

Fate speaks to us in its own special language - the language of images and symbols. And therefore, her clues are not enough to be heard or seen - they need to be interpreted correctly. Even at the dawn of its existence, humanity paid a lot of attention to dreams. It was believed that during dreams the soul leaves the body and communicates with gods and spirits. After some time, a huge number of dream books were compiled in which certain unusual symbols were deciphered.

What is sleep

In order to answer this question, we first need to understand what this phenomenon actually is.

Psychologists say that we dream for several reasons.

1. With the help of dreams, our brain processes the impressions received during the day and unloads. In this case, dreams are filled with fragments of events, feelings, thoughts of the past day. For example, we were busy working or studying, and at night we dream about it. This is how the brain structures the information received. Usually these dreams do not evoke particularly strong emotions. Therefore, there is little point in interpreting them.

2. Dreams are our subconscious’s way of symbolically conveying some information to us. Being conscious, we are usually focused on one thing, and rarely notice the huge number of sensations that pass through our psyche. But it registers everything, and through dreams it tries to draw our attention to some important thing or feeling that we have not noticed. For example, you have nightmares about your boss over and over again, although your relationship with them seems to be quite smooth in appearance. But after thinking carefully about them after the nightmares, you suddenly realize that you sense his hostility towards you. It can be expressed in facial expressions, hints, glances. Your conscious mind does not notice this, but the subconscious mind is very sensitive to such things.

3. In dreams we get the opportunity to fulfill our secret dreams. As Freud said, dreams are a kind of hallucination that allows our psyche to get what it lacks. Each of us has such pleasant dreams. Some see a romance with a stranger or a celebrity, others travel to beautiful places. Thus, our subconscious is trying to tell you what it is missing.

4. When we dream, we confront our psychological traumas and fears and try to free ourselves from them. Who among us has not had disturbing dreams about exams, where we go there completely unprepared or get a bad ticket? This is how our psyche plays out the fear of failure and the fear of negative evaluation, characteristic of many people, in order to free ourselves from them.

Women who have experienced violence then suffer from nightmares associated with it. The same thing happens to victims of disasters. In a dream, the psyche returns to a traumatic situation in order to finally cope with it, overcome fear, and encounter danger again. In case of minor injuries, this helps, and over time the negative experiences fade away. Our subconscious communicates with us through dreams. And by listening to it, we can understand ourselves and the Universe.

History of interpretations

The interpretation of dreams was undertaken by priests, sorcerers or soothsayers, emphasizing the mystical, magical nature of dreams. With the development of science, we have learned that dreams play an important biological function: they help our nervous system cope with impressions and process the information received.

One of the first to try to analyze dreams from a scientific point of view was Freud , who believed that dreams show a person’s unrealized desires, and later Jung , who argued that dreams are “a direct manifestation of the unconscious” and that you just need to correctly understand their language.

Now scientists are conducting experiments that will allow us to program the content of dreams. Some scientists believe that not all of our dreams are worthy of interpretation.

Over the course of our lives, we see millions of dreams, most of which are forgotten, and the only person who determines the importance of a particular dream is the dreamer himself. In other words, if a dream haunts you, if it repeats itself often, or if you periodically remember it, try to interpret it.

At the same time, most researchers agree that a dream is a set of individual symbols, which, again, only the dreamer can correctly decipher.

In society, of course, there are universal cultural symbols “house”, “river”) or archetypes (“sage”, “mother”), but their true meaning in a particular dream is accessible only to the “owner”. So it is useless to open the dream book.

In addition, most dream books answer the question: “What did you dream about?”, and the essence of the dream is to understand what problem the subconscious has posed to you and what you should pay attention to, that is, ask the question “What is the dream about?”

How can you learn to truthfully interpret your dreams?

Remember and write down

So, you decided to ask the Higher Powers a question and see the answer in a dream. Let's say on weekdays you get up at 7:00 am. Set your alarm clock 20-30 minutes earlier to calmly recall your night visions.

Of course, it is best not to interrupt your sleep at all: ask for a hint from the Higher Powers on a weekend night, when you have the opportunity to sleep as much as you want.

In the evening, prepare a notebook and pen, place them next to your bed so that in the morning you can write down your dream (after all, dreams have a tendency to be forgotten). Moreover, important dreams can and should be written down right at night - if you wake up! When you wake up, lie down for a while without changing your body position and remembering the dream you had. Perhaps at first you will remember one phrase or episode from a dream. Try to write down what you remember immediately, without getting out of bed: this is usually of paramount importance for understanding the entire dream. And then, starting from what you remember, try to restore what happened before or after this episode in the dream.

If you can’t remember anything at all, you can try just starting to write, starting with the phrase “Last night I dreamed...”. Often, while writing, a dream comes to mind.

If, despite all your efforts, you cannot remember your dream, do not be discouraged. Often it pops up in memory after a while by itself. It happens that the dream is not remembered, but an accurate and clear answer regarding your request comes to mind.

When are dreams prophetic?

You don’t have to try to interpret some dreams: they will come true in real life.

In what cases do you have prophetic dreams:

  1. Dreamed during the Holy Week: this is the period from Christmas to Epiphany. Will come true within the next year, they can predict the distant future. Most often they talk about unfavorable events in life, warning a person about troubles.
  2. Dreamed about church holidays. They come true the next day before noon. Most often they talk about some small situations to which a person does not attach importance.
  3. On the 3rd of any month, dreams occur that come true in exactly three weeks. Usually these are bright, joyful stories filled with positive emotions, so you can expect something good in real life.
  4. On the nights from Thursday to Friday, people rarely remember their dreams. But if you manage to remember, such a dream will definitely come true. Not immediately, but in the distant future. This is a sign of some fateful events that can radically change life.
  5. Be sure to remember the dream you had on your birthday or name day, it is absolutely prophetic.

On any other days, you should consult dream books to interpret the meaning of the plot that appeared to you in your night visions.

How to understand?

The first and most important thing to start interpreting your dream with is the mood in which you woke up. Most often, this will be the main clue as to whether the matter you are interested in will turn out for good or for bad.

Also remember that if you have two dreams in one night, they always speak in different words about the same thing. Therefore, if you cannot immediately decipher the first dream, you can start interpreting it from the second one, and then think about the first one again - perhaps it says the same thing, only with some details changed. But the third and further dreams may relate to other issues.

Next, re-read the dream you recorded carefully. Maybe it just describes the situation you are in now? For example, in a dream you are looking for something, or fleeing from something. Or maybe you are putting effort into solving some difficult problem. Does this remind you of your current situation? And how does it all end? Do you like this outcome? Can you influence it, and if so, how?

Maybe in a dream you made some mistake, because of which everything went wrong, or, on the contrary, you made the right decision. Think, perhaps in real life you will be able to take advantage of this advice or warning? After all, now you know how everything can end if you do just that.

If you wake up, vividly remembering some phrase or scene from a dream, then try to interpret it literally, as it sounded or happened. Or try to return to it after the dream has been completely “deciphered” - perhaps its meaning will change. Try to write down in a row all the verbs or adjectives that you used when writing down your dream, and read them. Perhaps in such a recording his message becomes clearer to you? Sometimes it makes sense to turn to dream books. However, do this thoughtfully and only after you have analyzed the dream in the ways indicated above.

If you have a good dream about a topic that interests you, don’t try to interpret it! Just take it as a good sign and rejoice. Such dreams are not told to anyone until noon.

If the dream upsets or frightens you, do not be upset. There are centuries-tested formulas that “neutralize” a bad vision, making sure that the dream does not come true. For example, turn the pillow over and say: “Where night goes, sleep goes.” Or: “What I saw in a dream, I will not see in reality.” However, if this is not a nightmare, but just a painful or unpleasant dream, do not rush to forget it. You asked for a hint from the Higher Powers - think, perhaps it makes sense to listen to their advice?

Self-transcription skill level

The technique of independently deciphering sleep takes a lot of energy, which must be regularly restored and overexertion avoided. Feeling enough strength, you can improve your skills.

Write down the associations, relax, take a comfortable position and close your eyes. Gradually restore the picture of the dream in detail, scroll through the plot several times, imagine yourself in the place of the characters in the dream, look at yourself from different angles and planes.

Do prophetic dreams exist?

Psychology cannot give a definite answer to this question. But Carl Jung, the famous Austrian psychologist, argued that in dreams we can come into contact with the collective unconscious. And this is the treasury of symbols, feelings and thoughts accumulated throughout the history of mankind. The collective unconscious stores knowledge about the past, present and future.

But not all dreams can be classified as those that penetrate it. How to distinguish them from a series of ordinary dreams? Let's give some tips.

– Prophetic dreams evoke very strong emotions after waking up. You are literally shaking, but you are sure that you have received an important message. The wisdom and depth inherent in a dream is intuitively felt.

– Your deceased relatives and friends may be present there, and in a dream you clearly feel that you are communicating with them, and not just with symbols. They are trying to convey some message to you, they say mysterious words, give you letters, etc. Sometimes, instead of relatives, people see mysterious elders, young children, etc. The characters in such dreams inspire awe.

– You see a descent into the dungeon, a basement, an underground castle. Or vice versa - you rise high into the mountains, into the sky, find yourself in paradise, etc. These are important symbols of the deep levels of the collective unconscious, from where we can draw knowledge about the future. The atmosphere of sleep feels solemn.

– You cannot forget about the dream you had. Strange signs begin to appear around him, and unpredictable coincidences associated with him occur. The dream is repeated several times.

How to understand the meaning of dreams about magic in your life

I want to say right away that sometimes bad dreams do not speak of harmful magic at all, but of other problems. But sometimes, still, about her. The details and plot of the dream depend on the type of influence made on you.

Top 15 Dreams about Negative Magic

  • Cemeteries, graves, the dead, mourning supplies - magic made in the cemetery. But do not confuse it with dreams where you are visited by a deceased familiar person, this is different.
  • Health and life-threatening situations. Made to death.
  • Someone disfigures your body - done to the part of the body that was damaged.
  • Sex with a person who is basically indifferent to you or even unpleasant. This is a signal that he could put a love spell on you. Sometimes this also applies to our former partners who want to renew their relationship in such a stupid way. After all, love spells usually don’t lead to any good.
  • Someone is blocking your path, hindering you in business. This person creates problems for you in your life and business.
  • Someone is stealing from you, taking something away. Perhaps this person put a steal on you.
  • You get it and find some nasty stuff. Negativity that you would be disgusted and you yourself would be disgusted by others. Perhaps made as a lining, a gift.
  • Problems at home. Negative taken at home.
  • Music and dancing. Sometimes they mean that a spell has been cast on you so that you carry out someone’s commands, dance to someone else’s tune.
  • Killed animals that are considered good. For example, a dog (a symbol of a friend), a dove (a symbol of the Divine), a rooster (a symbol of the fight against dark forces).
  • A witch or several witches are casting spells and plotting evil. Talks about magic in plain text. True, you should not confuse such dreams with dreams where the witch, on the contrary, is kind and helps you. Such dreams can sometimes occur during magical cleansing.
  • Predatory and poisonous animals can mean magical enemies. Moreover, there is a nuance here. Perhaps you know the person symbolized by this animal, but you do not want to believe that he is against you, or simply do not believe that he could damage you. Otherwise, in a dream you would see this person doing nasty things to you. But the appearance of the animal can give you a hint about this person.
  • Cat. You like this person. But you don't know his bad character. Do not confuse dreams about unfamiliar cats, symbolizing enemies, with dreams about your pets. These are different things.
  • Snake. You know that this person is toxic, you are afraid of him. But you didn’t imagine that he could cast negative magic on you.
  • Spider. You think that this is a dangerous person who holds the control levers in his hands.
  • Toad. You despise this person a little and you really dislike him. This, of course, is not a complete list of dreams indicating possible negative magic. A specialist, magician, witch, fortune teller can confirm or deny its presence on you. But my video “12 Signs that you have been damaged” can help you understand whether you can suspect such negativity.” The link will be below.

Dreams-suggestions

There is also a section of magic that helps to instill thoughts in the victim that are beneficial to the operator . This is often used for the purposes of manipulation or revenge . You see yourself doing something that is not typical for you, is harmful, and that you have decided not to do at all. For example, a dream that you want to commit suicide, or that you are leaving the husband or wife you love, may be a suggestion.

After such dreams, it may seem to you that this is exactly what you want. But in reality this is a trap, an instilled command.

One of the most harmless options is the suggestion to call. For example, you wake up in horror in the middle of the night, having seen a dream that your ex-girlfriend, who left you for someone else, tells you to call her. Looking forward to the morning, you call her, but she tells you not to call her. Believe me, you really pleased her vanity with this, because she understands that you obediently carried out her command, and that your psyche is in her hands. This girl is very dangerous, she can cast other black magic on you.

For some people, such secret power over others gives incredible pleasure. And it can cause serious harm to you. After all, in fact, such inspired thoughts are parasites for you.

Dreams during magical cleansing

During magical cleansing, sometimes in dreams you can observe the past, what was brought to you and by whom. Sometimes there is a confrontation between magicians. And also dreams where you take a shower, bathe (which is a symbol of cleansing), or the situation plays out in your favor. For example, you gain something valuable for yourself, defeat enemies, avoid danger, etc. There are, of course, a lot of options here.

I have not listed all of them, but only outlined the topic in general terms. Another interesting type of dreams about meetings with otherworldly forces. And here we move on to the topic of visions. It happens that creatures from another world come to us in a dream or in reality. And if we see them in reality, then these are precisely the so-called visions.

A dream I've already seen

Recurring dreams are not a rare occurrence for many. Usually these are not very pleasant dreams, instilling anxiety and fear of the future. There is no need to panic in such cases. Recurring dreams are a signal that you need, first of all, to understand yourself; such dreams also indicate some unresolved problems. The most important thing is not to program yourself for such dreams. Very often, before going to bed, we set ourselves up to repeat certain events. We tell our loved ones this dream, it is constantly in our heads. We are trying to understand what this dream means, why we dream about it more than once, etc. Therefore, it is not surprising that the dream is repeated again and again. As your problems are resolved, and as you get rid of the fear of the events that you dream about, such dreams will stop haunting you.

How to analyze a dream. Robert Johnson's 4 steps

One of the most popular ways to understand the essence of a dream is a four-step approach developed by a follower of Jung, psychotherapist Robert Johnson . He recommends analyzing each detail of the dream separately, and only then identifying the essence of the dream.

Let's look at four steps: searching for associations, linking images, interpretation and ritual using the example of a dream that the woman who saw it called “Tramp”:

“I'm looking for the keys to my car. I understand that my husband has them. Then I remember that my brother borrowed my car and still hasn’t returned it. I see my husband and brother and call them. They don't seem to hear me. Then an unkempt young man who looks like a tramp climbs into the car and drives away. I feel enormous resentment, helplessness and, to some extent, loneliness.”

First step: Search for associations

Write down all the images of your dream (location, participants, colors, seasons, clothing) and any associations (words, thoughts, feelings, or memories) that each image evokes. Make pairs, not chains, for example, you dreamed that you were flying on an airplane, then the pairs can be like this: “airplane - travel”, “airplane - danger”, “airplane - metal”. Incorrect association chain: “airplane – travel – vacation – sea – sanatorium.”

Return to the original image every time. Once the associations are written down, choose one or two that intuitively feel right to you. Rely only on your gut feeling.

In our example, the woman felt that she associated her husband and brother with calmness, harmony and the desire for peace. The car was a symbol of excessive busyness, a soulless box in which she rushed around on endless errands. The tramp personified the desire for constant movement, a striving forward that is difficult to control, and the absence of peace.

Second stage: Linking images

We need to find those parts of the inner selves that represent the dream images. Johnson believes that every dream is a portrait of the dreamer, and if you dreamed about your sister, this does not mean that we are talking about your relationship with her. Think about what part of your inner self your sister is associated with - it could be the desire for career achievements, motherhood, or even aggression - be extremely honest.

In our example, the woman realized that her husband and brother were the part of her that yearned for a quiet home life and leisurely reflection. The tramp was the embodiment of her professional ambitions, the desire to advance further and further in her career. The dream showed a conflict between what the husband and brother represented and the “world” of the tramp.

Third stage: Interpretation - analysis of the dream as a whole

When we understand the associations and internal or external impressions that caused their appearance in a dream, all that remains is to put the information together. After analyzing “The Tramp,” the woman realized that she was worried that she was spending too much time at work and that she did not have time for quiet reflection and time with her family.

How to interpret dreams correctly - Nightmares

The most unpleasant dreams are nightmares; these dreams are directly related to our psychological state. When a person is sick or going through a difficult period in life associated with material losses, moral, and professional problems, he may be overcome by nightmares during this period. If you photograph various disasters, hospitals, disabled people, predators, bloody scenes, insects that sting and bite, this could be a signal of illness. We all know our weak points, so having seen such a dream, you need to take care of your health, be careful, and, if possible, undergo a comprehensive examination.

Sometimes we see our loved ones sick; very often we have such dreams when we are consumed by a feeling of guilt towards this person. To get rid of such dreams, you need to get rid of the feeling that haunts us. You need to either ask for forgiveness from this person if you are really to blame, or convince yourself that you are tormented in vain. Most of the unpleasant events that we see in our dreams are our subconscious fears. And as long as we are afraid of failing an exam or getting into an accident, such dreams will haunt us. Therefore, on the contrary, before going to bed, it is advisable to imagine a favorable outcome of events that inspire fears in you and fall asleep with these positive thoughts.

Popular stories

Most people often dream about the same thing. There are popular dream plots that every person has had at least once in their life. They are the easiest to interpret.

The most common dreams:

  1. Nightmares in which you find yourself in the middle of a catastrophe or natural disaster, perhaps even an apocalypse. This means that in real life there will be a dark streak. You will have to cope with a huge number of problems and overcome difficulties, but in the end everything will end well.
  2. Nightmares in which loved ones die are usually frightening. But there is no need to be afraid - your dreamed relatives will live happily ever after, their health is not in danger. Most often, such a plot indicates that you have accepted and stopped experiencing negativity and resentment towards your relative. The subconscious is thus freed from emotions experienced in the past.
  3. Death in a dream: your own or a loved one’s is also a favorable sign. It symbolizes the completion of the current stage of life and reaching a new level of your development. This is liberation from the shackles of the past, getting rid of everything that pulls you down and prevents you from growing spiritually.
  4. Dreams in which you see money, gold bars, jewelry or countless treasures indicate that your talents require an outlet. You're not realizing your full creative potential, so it's worth looking for ways to use it.
  5. Fantastic stories with monsters, aliens and other non-existent creatures are a sign that you have become bored with life. You are tired of routine and monotonous work. A change of scenery and new experiences are required.

John Kehoe method

John Kehoe, author of the bestseller “The Subconscious Mind Can Do Anything,” has his own approach to dream interpretation. He believed: any dream is a projection of your feelings and thoughts, innermost desires. The subconscious is trying to give some kind of sign. If you understand which one, you will be able to make the right decision in a problem situation.

How to decipher a dream using the Kehoe method:

  1. In the morning, rewrite the plot of the dream in your diary, trying to remember not only small details, characters and everything that happened, but also the feelings and emotions that you experienced.
  2. Then close your eyes and imagine that each person in the dream is yourself. For example, if you had a fight with someone in night vision, put yourself in the shoes of both characters. And then you will understand which aspects of your personality conflict with each other, what you do not accept in yourself and reject.
  3. Try to analyze the events that happened in the kingdom of Morpheus, relying on your own intuition. For example, you were drowning. This may mean that in real life you are faced with a bunch of problems for which you do not see a solution, and you feel deprived of oxygen.
  4. If you couldn’t guess what the dream means on the first try, it means you’re not yet ready to know the answer. Postpone decoding until a more appropriate moment; sooner or later you will interpret the dream.

This method is a symbiosis of intuition and logic. It helps you decipher the meaning of a dream as correctly as possible and get answers to questions that concern you in real life.
